Music is seen as an art, a way of communicating, a way of expressing feelings. It is used in the celebration of different events in both the traditional and modern setup
In Maputo, December is a very busy and exciting month for everyone in the music sector. It is the sector’s role to provide entertainment, joy, and happiness to the public.
It is a tradition for the festivities to start at the beginning of December and continue to the New Year. True to form, the 2016 festive season leading to the start of 2017 did not disappoint. Several concerts were organized by music schools, Mozambican promoters, restaurants, and hotels; all with one mission: to bring entertainment to a city celebrating the end of a good year.
The Maputo community celebrated on the streets, at the beach, in restaurants, hotels, and homes. Music was played live, on CD’s, computers and phones as every device and instrument was used to provide a soundtrack for the festive season. Local TV stations followed suite showcasing recorded live shows by Artists from all over the world.
As the festive season approached, Music Crossroads Mozambique Academy students and teachers joined the rest of the music sector to prepare and showcase their talents to the community. The students were excited as they not only got to show their improvements, but they also got to experience the satisfaction of being paid for their performances, which is one of the reasons why most of the students are studying the professional course.
From night until morning, musicians plied their craft in front of captivated audiences, while fireworks whizzed and cracked around them. The celebrations continued until the end of the first week of the New Year.
During happy moments like the festive season, music acts as a vehicle for self-expression, and for joy. It not only revives and animates the spirits of listeners but also of the musicians themselves. Music plays a very important role for all and regardless of the situation, it will always be an integral part of our lives.
