How to celebrate the 50th anniversary Malawi independence?
Music Crossroads Malawi was requested to write a theme song for the 50th anniversary independence celebrations in Lilongwe. This was done by the Music Crossroads Model choir and the Academy teachers. They recorded the song and produced a music video, and then performed it live during the celebrations. The video is in circulation on local TV stations.
The independence celebrations took place the 6th of July at the Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, which fits about 30,000 people. The event was also broadcasted live on the national TV which has a viewership of over 11 million people countrywide.
The day was filled with activities including dances, acrobatics, a parade and some musical performances. Some speeches were made by the president, Mr. Arthur Peter Mutharika, and his vice president, Mr. Saulos Chilima. Later, there was a football match and a parade.
This year’s celebrations are bigger because its been 50 years since Malawi gained independence. It marks an important time in the history of the country, as it gives people time to reflect what has been done in these past 50 years and how they can learn from it to develop further as a country.
Events like this spark interest in all age groups. So, young and old people attended the event, although it is most likely that the younger ages dominated, from the ages of 15-35.
