Praises MCA Malawi

Group Village Headman Chimphamba, of Mchinji district, applauded Music Crossroads Academy Malawi for its unique Music Program that is offered at Legson Kayira Junior Primary School.

Speaking in Mchinji district during a Monitoring and Evaluation visit, the Group Village Headman expressed excitement about the program. He said that the program has transformed his village’s music landscape, particularly to the learners of Legson Kayira Junior Primary School and the community members.

It is exciting to see school children and members of the community being able to play contemporary music instruments as Guitars, Keyboards and Harmonicas under the Music Crossroads Academy’s music program‘, he said.

Unlike before the start of the program, the students are now busy with the instruments and vocal trainings even after school hours. It has become a new career perspective, and to others a great hobby they cherish so much that they have no time to go around messing up and engaging in behaviours that could compromise their future’, he added.

The School’s Deputy Headmaster, Mr. Jombo, couldn’t agree more with the Village Headman. ‘The relevance of Music Crossroads Academy’s presence at our school needs no emphasis‘. Jombo commended the Academy for a great and innovative program. ‘The program is not only helping reveal the students’ talents but also fostering discipline in the students, concentration in class, self-problem solving and creative self-expression.

Before the Academy started the program, its trainers screened the pupils to ascertain their levels of competence in terms of understanding music. The trainers used folk songs among other things to check the learners’ pitches and ability to sing. They conducted pitch dictations to identify those who have perfect pitch and those who do not in order to group them when conducting  lessons. They also assessed if they could sing one song by modulating to different keys. It was after this exercise that the trainers grouped the learners according to their levels.

This music program has been inspirational, ecstatic and thrilling to the learners of Legson Kayira Junior Primary School and to the entire community. People of Chimphamba are now able to play simple melodies on the instruments of their choice: Guitar, Keyboard, Harmonicas and Recorders.
