Situated in Maputo, the Music Crossroads Mozambique Academy is a cultural and creative hub that nurtures talented young musicians through exciting and rewarding professional certificate programmes, involving both practical and theoretical aspects of music education.

About MCA Mozambique

Established in 2013 with an immense contribution to the development of the music sector in Mozambique. The dynamic Professional Certificate Program has seen the academy grooming teachers with quality skills and enrolling about 180 students with success stories since its launch. Recently the addition of individual children and adult classes has also brought more diversity to our program as we are trying to cater for all members of the society.

In the last years, our academy in Mozambique has been fuelling creativity, innovation and cultural diversity for the youth through Music. Today, our outreach has now reached 5.000 young musicians and due to its diversity, the organization today is regarded as a hub that has nurtured talented musicians that are currently recognized in the Mozambican music industry.

As an organization, we have reached an audience of more than 50.000 people throughout the country, through the various activities such as festivals and workshops aimed at enhancing the knowledge of all stakeholders in the sector. We strive to address issues affecting the youth such as HIV, AIDS, female empowerment, poverty, education, disability and early child marriages using music as a tool for change.

The establishment of the Music Crossroads Academies in 2013 has contributed immensely to the development of the music sector in Mozambique. Over the years, we have created synergies and partnerships with local and international organizations such as the International Music Council, OCPA, FRIDA, Music Fund, UNESCO, AWEPA, Municipality of Maputo, CONCERTS S.A., IVERCA, KHUZULA and JM Norway for our unique regional and international youth exchange program MOVE funded by Norec to bridge the gaps within the region and abroad bringing cross-cultural skills and global networking among the young musicians.

Every child has the right to a music education. Over the years little music education has been taught in Government primary schools prompting the MCA with its Alumni and volunteers to embark on a mission to offer music education to two schools and a community center in Xipamanine.

The children are taught basic music notations and given an opportunity to try out all instruments using the Instrument Carousel method before each child makes their own choice on the instrument that best suits them.Every child has the right to a music education.

The MCA offers children’s programs at the academy during weekends and holidays. We embarked on a project ‘som na garem’ which means ‘sound in the garage’, in our academy garage where the activities for the children usually take place.

This project offers a safe space for children where they can have contact with musical instruments and express themselves freely. We have had large numbers of children attending these sessions, we have 35 children attending regularly and these moments have been very good as the children become very creative.

This activity is the first of its kind. Bringing together different cultures,  a space to celebrate cultures and meet different people from different African  countries. Semana Africana is celebrated in the week leading to 25 May, the day we celebrate African Day. The week is used to promote and preserve African music. All teachers and students are involved to make sure the week is a success

LOUD was created with a mission to educate and empower young girls and women in Mozambique on the importance of female inclusion in the music sector in Sub-Saharan Africa, by providing various educational and social programs.
