About us

Music Crossroads is a non-profit organisation which uses the power of music education, professional training, live performances and promotion of young talents to support the development of the music education sector and the music industry in the culturally rich southern African region.

Music Crossroads was initiated in 1995, by Jeunesses Musicales International, through the organisation of annual festivals, international band tours, and trainings provided for young talents in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Now, Music Crossroads is one of the biggest and most exciting cultural development initiatives in Africa, and has involved more than 200,000 young musicians and reached an audience of more than a million listeners in southern Africa.

Our Mission and values

Our mission is to empower young people through music!

Music Crossroads aims to encourage a sense of collective spirit, social awareness and responsibility, but also individual growth and self-expression to make a positive difference in our participants’ immediate environment. The programs provide equal opportunity and relevant music education for young people to help them reach their full potential as musicians and as human beings.

Fostering Growth, Equality, and Professional Opportunities

The program treats each young participant with respect and helps them develop individual growth and self-expression.

Music Crossroads contributors must become member-based organizations where young people can influence and develop a deeper understanding of democratic values, gender equality and human rights.

Music Crossroads represents hope, opportunity and belief in the future – providing the necessary tools that, combined with the necessary talent, personality and perseverance, can enable young people to pursue a professional music career locally, nationally or internationally.

Building Professionalism, Expanding Accessible Music Education, and Fostering Inclusive Growth

  • Improve the livelihoods of talented young people in the creative industry by building capacity and professionalism
  • Increase the availability of culturally appropriate, accessible and qualitative music education for young people through self-sufficient music education institutions.
  • Allow the growth of everyone involved, from musicians to technicians and managers, and the public, including all musical and cultural styles.
